Welcome

LivingStone Monastery was founded in 1956, as a Poor Clare Monastery.  The Poor Clares is a term given to the Order of St. Clare,  a Second Franciscan Order originally founded by St. Clare of Assisi and St. Francis of Assisi in 1212 in Italy.  The first Poor Clares came from Germany in 1877 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio.  In 1956, Poor Clares from Cleveland   established a foundation in Newport News, Virginia.  They remained in Newport News, VA until 2004 when they moved to Bethlehem Monastery in Barhamsville, Va.

In 2004, Hope Community Church purchased the property from the Sisters of Poor Clare.  They created the Mosaic Campus and gave birth to the LivingStone Monastery (LSM), as well as the LivingStone House of Prayer (LHOP).

On January 1, 2012, LivingStone Monastery became a ministry of Rivers Cross Anglican Church (RiversCross.org) and the Company of Jesus (CompanyofJesus.org).  Rivers Cross Anglican Church (RCAC) is a member of the Anglican Mission in America.  The Company of Jesus is an ecumenical ‘Third Order” Community of Franciscans and Benedictines in the Anglican Tradition.  LSM is a “priory” of the Company of Jesus (CJ).

LivingStone Monastery is located on the Mosaic Campus at 28 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.   The Mosaic Campus is a comprised of different churches and ministries.

Living Stone's name was inspired by 1 Peter 2:4:

“As you come to him, the living stone - rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
