LivingStone Monastery was founded in 1956, as a Poor Clare Monastery.  The Poor Clares is a term given to the Order of St. Clare,  a Second Franciscan Order originally founded by St. Clare of Assisi and St. Francis of Assisi in 1212 in Italy.  The first Poor Clares came from Germany in 1877 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio.  In 1956, Poor Clares from Cleveland   established a foundation in Newport News, Virginia.  They remained in Newport News, VA until 2004 when they moved to Bethlehem Monastery in Barhamsville, Va.

In 2004, Hope Community Church purchased the property from the Sisters of Poor Clare.  They created the Mosaic Campus and gave birth to the LivingStone Monastery (LSM), as well as the LivingStone House of Prayer (LHOP).

LivingStone Monastery is a ministry of Rivers Cross Anglican Church and the Company of Jesus. Through our liturgical life and wise stewardship, we maintain a sacred physical and spiritual community which provides:

a. A ministry of prayer and hospitality to the Body of

Christ by providing:

space for churches to hold their services and

bible studies

a place for prayer within our Prayer Chapel

a library and counseling rooms

b. Respite for the weary of soul by providing:

a place where guests can rest, reflect and focus

on their ministries and callings within the Body

of Christ,

a safe haven for those in crisis who need temporary

accommodations this includes working with the Red Cross to identify those in need of assistance.

c. Mercy to the less fortunate by hosting:

a food pantry for the hungry six days a week;

a thrift store for children and pregnant women.

d. Training for Kingdom Work by providing:

Classroom space for study and instruction;

Seminars, biblical studies and discipleship training;

Missionary training;

a reference library and educational resources.

Livingstone Monastery is open to Christian individuals and groups for retreats.  We offer very flexible terms for Church groups.  The grounds feature dorm-style housing for individuals and amenities and meals are included.
