Welcome to LivingStone Monastery in Newport News, VA.
LivingStone Monastery opened in February 2004 and is the former home of the Sisters of Poor Clare - a cloistered community of Franciscan nuns who lived here for over 50 years.
Now a monastery in the Evangelical Tradition, LivingStone is a religious community called to support the local church, practice hospitality and create an environment for spiritual formation.
LivingStone is a ministry of Hope Community Church and exists on the campus of Mosaic, a multi-congregational partnership of churches. The idea is simple: one house, one God, many churches, shared resources. In our committed effort to keep to the monastic tradition, LivingStone is indeed still a house. In addition to housing six churches, LivingStone is a living community, home to 12 "workers" (some single, some married) who have committed this season of their lives to live and serve in LivingStone's calling.
LivingStone's name was inspired by 1 Peter 2:4:
As you come to Him, the living stone - rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
